Elizabeth “Betty” M. Wanta, 100

Elizabeth “Betty” M. Wanta, née Pohlman, of Stevens Point, passed away at Dimensions Living on May 1, 2024, at the age of 100.

Betty was born to Henry and Marion (née Best) Pohlman in Glidden, Wis. She was married to Norman L. Wanta.

Betty graduated from Central State Teachers College of Stevens Point in 1945, with a Bachelor of Science in high school curriculum. She taught history, social studies, and mathematics at Pittsville High School from 1945-1946 and in Rudolph from 1946-1947. She also taught homebound students.

Betty was a dedicated volunteer for voter registration and was recognized by the local hospital for her contributions. She was a member of the Stevens Point Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Alpha Phi Sorority, Jaycettes, and the former local Stevens Point Art League, where she held various leadership positions.

Betty is survived by her children, Thomas (Sheila) Wanta, their son, Steve (Christina) Wanta (children, Josephine and William); Gene (Linda) Wanta, their son, Craig (Kristi) Krieski (children, Anna, Tyler, and Ashley (fiancé Brett Crary) Krieski), and their daughter, Kelly (Jeff) Firnett (children, Sabrina and Madelyn); Mary (John) Gestner; and Anne Wanta, her daughters, Christine Tarbox (daughter, Alyssa Baumgartner) and Melissa Serie (son, Jonathan Serie); and many more extended family members.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette “Johnnie” (Robert) Kunkel, Margaret (Rudy) Klein, Mary Ann (Thomas) Morden, Ruth (Robert) Stewart, and Doris (Robert) Quesnell; and her grandson, John Wanta.

Funeral visitation will be held at Shuda Funeral home in Stevens Point on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 10-11 a.m. with a service at 11. Burial will follow at Guardian Angel.
