The Stevens Point Area YMCA and Boys & Girls Club of Portage County are working with local schools to offer a little extra school help on Wednesdays.

Stevens Point schools returned to in-person instruction in early Sept. with a staggered class schedule and Wednesdays designated as an e-learning day, when students attend virtual classes from home.

The Wednesday Learning Centers being offered at the Stevens Point YMCA and area Boys and Girls Club centers have been funded through a grant from the United Way of Portage County and Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin’s COVID-Relief Fund, according to a news release from the BGC.

Wednesday Learning Centers will serve K-6 students, with younger students attending the YMCA, and students in grades 3-6 at Boys and Girls Club locations in Stevens Point, Plover, and at Kennedy Elementary School in Junction City. The joint locations can accommodate 226 students on Wednesdays.

Teachers aides from the Stevens Point Area Public School District will be placed in each of the learning centers, the news release said.

“This is such a great example of how Portage County organizations partner to meet the emerging needs of our families,” said Sharon Johnson, CEO of the Stevens Point Area YMCA. “We are so thankful to all who have contributed to the COVID-Relief Fund.”

Wednesday Learning Centers will also provide free, healthy breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, as well as a variety of fun and enriching activities. The cost to attend is $10 per child per Wednesday. Families who qualify for free or reduced lunches will have the fee waived.

If parents are interested in signing their students up for Wednesday Learning Centers they should call or visit the websites of the Boys & Girls Club (715) 341-4386 or www.bgclubpc.org or the YMCA (715) 952-9313 or www.spymca.org to complete an application. Capacity is limited, but waiting lists will be developed and future expansion of Learning Centers will be considered by partner agencies.
