STEVENS POINT – A $4.5 million state contract to improve a stretch of State Hwy. 66 in Portage County has been signed by Gov. Tony Evers, with work set to begin April 2.

The project will resurface WIS 66 between the Stevens Point Municipal Airport and the eastern junction of County J. Construction will span parts of the city of Stevens Point and the towns of Hull and Sharon.

American Asphalt of Wisconsin is the prime contractor.

The work includes resurfacing, curb and gutter repairs at Ellis Road, one culvert replacement, guardrail updates, and storm sewer installation. Crews will also add a new left-turn lane on eastbound WIS 66 at Torun Road and install centerline rumble strips.

The two bridges over the Plover River will receive concrete overlays and minor repairs. Bridge parapets will be cleaned and stained.

WIS 66 will remain open during construction, though motorists can expect daytime flagging during milling, paving, and intersection improvements. Temporary signals will be used to facilitate bridge work.

Construction is expected to wrap up in July, depending on weather and construction progress.

Motorists are reminded that handheld cellphone use is prohibited in Wisconsin work zones.
