WisDOT releases weekly road construction update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood counties.

Construction schedules may fluctuate pending weather conditions and crew availability.
Adams County
- Highway: WIS 13
- Location: North Street to Mound View Drive, Friendship
- Schedule: May 6 to Oct. 15, 2024
- Project description: This project will include concrete joint repairs and removing the existing concrete pavement surface and installing a new asphalt driving surface. Work will be completed on the existing curb ramps to bring them up to current Americans with Disabilities Act standards. New pavement markings and guardrail within the project limits will be installed as needed.
- Anticipated work: Crews will begin milling and paving operations.
- Traffic impacts: The outside lanes of WIS 13 (Main Street) are closed northbound and southbound from North Street to West Street. The parking lanes are closed northbound and southbound from West Street to County J (Lake Street). A width restriction of 13 feet is in place on WIS 13 (Main Street) through the limits of the project. Curb ramp closures are in place on the east side of WIS 13 (Main Street) at East North Street, Airport Drive, East 4th Street, East 2nd Street, East 1st Street, and County J (Lake Street). East North Street will open to through traffic at WIS 13 (Main Street). Flagging operations are anticipated along WIS 13 (Main Street).

Forest County
- Highway: WIS 32
- Location: County C to Forest Avenue
- Schedule: May 20 to Sept. 13, 2024
- Project description: The project consists of the rehabilitation of WIS 32 from County C to Forest Avenue. Work will include pavement removal, culvert pipe and storm sewer, curb and gutter, sidewalk, retaining wall replacement, and asphalt paving.
- Anticipated work: Crews will continue grading and installing sidewalk, and curb and gutter.
- Traffic impacts: Traffic is shifted east through the project limits. Both northbound and southbound traffic lanes are reduced to a 10-foot maximum width. All shoulders and parking along WIS 32 through the project limits are closed.

- Highway: WIS 55
- Location: Scott Lake Road to WIS 70
- Schedule: Aug. 23 to Oct. 15, 2024
- Project description: Crews will resurface the highway, install new guardrails, and replace 24 culverts along WIS 55.
- Anticipated work: Crews will continue culvert pipe installation, begin grading and asphalt patching, and begin installing guardrail.
- Traffic impacts: WIS 55 will be closed and detoured. The detour route will follow US 8, WIS 139, and WIS 70.

Green Lake County
- Highway: WIS 44
- Location: Kingston Bridge
- Schedule: Aug. 19 to Oct. 7, 2024
- Project description: Crews will mill and remove the top of the existing concrete bridge deck, perform spot repairs, and add a new concrete overlay. Crews will also repair isolated areas of the spillway walls under the bridge and install short sections of new asphalt bridge approaches.
- Anticipated work: Crews will prepare the bridge deck for overlay, perform concrete surface repairs, pave asphalt for southbound lane bridge approaches, and install protective surface treatment on the southbound lane of the bridge deck.
- Traffic impacts: Traffic is reduced to one lane over the bridge with temporary signals scheduled until Oct. 7, 2024. Traffic is currently using the northbound lane with temporary signals. After work is completed on the current side, traffic will be switched to the southbound lane in both directions with temporary signals.

- Highway: WIS 73
- Location: WIS 23 intersection to WIS 44
- Schedule: June 24 to Aug. 21, 2024
- Project description: Crews will widen WIS 23 and add a left turn lane onto WIS 73. Crews will also resurface WIS 73 from WIS 23 to WIS 44 and replace and repair culverts along that stretch.
- Anticipated work: On WIS 73, crews will complete finishing items. On WIS 23, crews will also complete finishing items.
- Traffic impacts: Flagging operations are expected as needed on WIS 73. WIS 23 lanes will shift to the north and be reduced to an 11-foot width.

Iron and Vilas Counties
- Highway: US 51
- Location: County W to Weber Creek Bridge
- Schedule: June 17 to September 2024
- Project description: Crews will replace and repair culverts, replace curb and gutter, mill and overlay asphalt pavement, install centerline rumble strips, and upgrade pavement markings.
- Anticipated work: Crews will pave the graded area north of Mercer and trail crossing, landscape remaining areas, and begin milling and paving starting on the south end of Mercer.
- Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter one lane flagging operations throughout the project.

Langlade County
- Highway: WIS 55
- Location: Nine Mile Creek Bridge
- Schedule: May 6 to Aug. 8, 2024
- Project description: This project will consist of removing the existing culverts and roadway over Nine Mile Creek and constructing a new buried slab bridge structure and bridge approaches.
- Anticipated work: Crews will remove the temporary lane on the northbound side and construct the northbound lane to complete the paving.
- Traffic impacts: Traffic will be switched back to the west side early in the week. Traffic will be traveling on a temporary bypass lane around the work area. Traffic will be maintained by temporary traffic signals throughout this timeframe.

Marathon County
- Highway: US 51
- Location: Decator Drive to the Lincoln County Line
- Schedule: Aug. 26 to November 2024
- Project description: Crews will resurface the highway, replace a wingwall on a box culvert, and install shoulder rumble strips.
- Anticipated work: Crews will begin milling and paving the northbound shoulder and right southbound lane.
- Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter single lane closures in both the north and southbound lanes.

- Highway: WIS 13
- Location: WIS 98 to County N
- Schedule: April 11 to Sept. 27, 2024
- Project description: Work includes completing concrete joint repairs and replacements, replacing the asphalt shoulders, replacing guardrail, inlet and manhole repairs as needed, new pavement markings, and replacing curb ramps that are not compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
- Anticipated work: Crews will continue working on concrete repair/replacement areas in Unity and Colby, pave notch repairs as needed, and approach slabs on the bridge on the WIS 13 southbound lane, form concrete pavement in Unity on WIS 13, and continue WIS 13 diamond grinding from WIS 153 to Unity.
- Traffic impacts: WIS 13 lane closures in Unity from 2nd Street to North Unity Limits (approximately 0.5 miles) from May 13 to Sept. 20. WIS 13 closure with detour from WIS 153 to County N in Colby. The signed detour utilizes WIS 29 and WIS 97 until Sept. 27.

Oneida County
- Highway: US 8
- Location: WIS 17 North to County P
- Schedule: May 6 to Sept. 20, 2024
- Project description: The project will include pavement replacement and intersection upgrades.
- Anticipated work: Crews will continue paving, begin work on shoulders, and install rumble strips.
- Traffic impacts: Traffic will be detoured to County P and WIS 17, and US 8 will be closed.

- Location: Stevens Street to Pollyanna Road
- Schedule: May 17 to Sept. 6
- Project description: Crews will replace the asphalt pavement and curb and gutter.
- Anticipated work: Crews will begin completing finishing items.
- Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect reduced lane capacity down to one lane in each direction.

Portage and Marathon Counties
- Highway: I-39 and WIS 34
- Location: I-39 over the Wisconsin River near Rothschild and the bridge on WIS 34 over the Little Eau Plaine River
- Schedule: July 29 to Aug. 23 2024
- Project description: Crews will overlay the bridges on I-39 over the Wisconsin River near Rothschild and the bridge on WIS 34 over the Little Eau Plaine River.
- Anticipated work: Crews will install WIS 34 pavement markings and begin I-39 northbound outside lane overlay and pavement markings.
- Traffic impacts: There will be no lane restrictions during the Labor Day weekend for I-39 work. Next week, the contractor is closing the I-39 northbound outside lane on Tuesday and Wednesday to finish overlay work in the northbound outside lane. The northbound lanes will also be closed for one day the following week to do a final sweep/clean up in both lanes. WIS 34 work is ongoing. Temporary traffic signals are in place to drop traffic down to one lane. The contractor is planning to complete work on the bridge this week Thursday or Friday.

Portage County
- Highway: I-39
- Location: WIS 54 to North 2nd Street
- Schedule: July 15 to Nov. 8, 2024
- Project description: Crews will resurface the highway, including the ramps, replace guardrail, install high friction surface treatment on I-39 northbound at the BUS 51 interchange, install pavement marking, and install shoulder rumble strips.
- Anticipated work: Crews will continue placement of asphalt pavement along I-39 between WIS 54 and North 2nd Street, remove guardrail, grade and shape the area near bridge corners, and install new guardrail.
- Traffic impacts: I-39 is anticipated to have various lane, shoulder, and ramp closures. The following are anticipated dates of the closures: I-39 northbound lane closures from WIS 54 to County HH from Sept. 3 to Sept. 6. I-39 southbound lane closures from WIS 54 to North 2nd Street from Sept. 3 to Sept. 6.

Shawano County
- Highway: US 45
- Location: WIS 29 to the Langlade County Line
- Schedule: June 24 to September 2024
- Project description: Crews will remove and pave a new asphalt surface, replace culverts and guardrails along with pavement markings and centerline rumble strips.
- Anticipated work: Crews will complete shouldering, complete restoration throughout the project, continue work on permanent pavement marking, and install thermal plastic at snowmobile crossings.
- Traffic impacts: Expect lane closures with flagging operations.

Waupaca County
- Highway: WIS 49
- Location: North Street (Waupaca) to Depot Street (Scandinavia)
- Schedule: July 29 to Oct. 8, 2024
- Project description: This project will resurface the road, along with the installation of new pavement marking and placement of centerline rumble strips. Crews will also replace guardrails, curb and gutter, and four culverts. Crews will pave shoulders between North Street and Timber Drive and construct two retaining walls with new guardrails to stabilize the slope approximately a half mile north of County Q.
- Anticipated work: Crews will continue work at retaining walls, pave from existing pavement to the retaining walls, install guardrail at the retaining walls, and place new curb and gutter in Waupaca.
- Traffic impacts: Single lane closure controlled by temporary traffic signals between County Q and Shady Drive. Single lane closure controlled by flagging operations as needed. WIS 49 road closure and detour is scheduled for Sept. 9.

Wood County
- Highway: WIS 73
- Location: WIS 173 to WIS 54
- Schedule: Aug. 5 to Oct. 14, 2024
- Project description: Crews will repave the road, replace curb and gutter, widen the shoulders, and replace the guardrail on the Moccasin Creek Bridge. Crews will also install a sidewalk along the north side of 9th Street from WIS 73 to Vilas Avenue.
- Anticipated work: Crews will begin placing topsoil around the new sidewalk and curb and gutter, pave asphalt at the southbound pavement replacement area near Old Wisconsin 73, at the bike path for the new curb ramps, and at various driveways, place concrete for the curb and gutter at the pavement and median replacements in the southbound lane between Old Wisconsin 73 and the railroad tracks and at the Moccasin Creek bridge, and reinstall the traffic signal pole in the northeast corner of the WIS 73 and WIS 173 intersection.
- Traffic impacts: WIS 73 northbound will have the outside lane closed from WIS 173 to Wilhorn Street. WIS 73 southbound will have the outside shoulder closed from Wilhorn Street to WIS 173. From Old Wisconsin 73 to the railroad tracks, WIS 73 southbound is shifted to the WIS 73 northbound side where traffic is running counter-directional on the northbound lane, shoulder, and temporary widening. Motorists can expect flagging operations to occur in both the southbound and northbound lanes on WIS 73 between WIS 173 and WIS 54.
