Winter storm to bring snow, heavy rain to Portage County

STEVENS POINT — A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy rain, wet snow, and strong winds to Portage County and much of north-central Wisconsin beginning Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say snowfall amounts have increased by one to two inches since the previous briefing, with the heaviest accumulation expected in the northern part of the state. A winter weather advisory is in effect for Portage, Wood, Waupaca, Waushara, Marathon, Shawano, Menominee, northern Oconto, and northern Marinette counties from midnight Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The storm is expected to bring a mix of rain and snow, with wet and heavy snowfall creating the potential for downed tree branches and power outages. Winds will intensify from the north Wednesday morning, reducing visibility to one mile or less in areas of falling snow.
Heavy rainfall on frozen ground may lead to flooding in low-lying areas, as well as along rivers and small streams. Forecasters warn of the potential for ice jams, which could contribute to additional flooding both during and after the storm.
Residents are urged to use caution while traveling and prepare for hazardous conditions through Wednesday evening.
