Walk-Roll Audit planned in Amherst to assess street safety
By Brandi Makuski
AMHERST – Portage County residents are invited to take part in a Walk-Roll Audit on May 19 to help evaluate the safety and accessibility of local streets for all users.
The event, which runs from 3 to 4 p.m., is part of the Portage County Safe Streets and Roads for All project and aims to gather community input on how streets can better accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, and drivers.
“This is a great opportunity for residents interested in safer, more inclusive streets to provide feedback and learn how everyday infrastructure impacts mobility for everyone,” said Kristen Johnson, planner with Portage County Planning and Zoning.
The audit begins at Amherst Village Hall, 160 Mill St., with participants walking a one-mile designated route. Those wishing to join later can meet at 3:20 p.m. near the corner of North Main and School streets. The route includes rest points for participants to stop, observe, and discuss traffic flow, street design, and safety concerns without needing to complete the full walk.
The feedback gathered will help inform updates to the Portage County Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, which was introduced in 2014.
Two additional Walk-Roll Audits will take place in Stevens Point later in the week.
Parking is available at Amherst Village Hall. To request accommodations or for questions, contact Becky Roberts at 715-340-7221 or [email protected].
