UWSP to Showcase ‘The Nutcracker’, Jazz-Style

Jazz versions of selections from “The Nutcracker Suite” will be performed by University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Jazz Ensemble during a concert on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The concert will be held at 7:30 PM in Michelsen Hall of the Noel Fine Arts Center. Directed by Jazz Studies Professor Mathew Buchman, the ensemble will perform jazz arrangements by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn of “Overture,” “Sugar Rum Cherry,” “Chinoiserie” and “Peanut Brittle Brigade” from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite.”

The ensemble will also feature its senior members in “Tall Cotton” by Sammy Nestico and perform “Atlantis” by McCoy Tyner, “Cherokee” by Ray Noble and “The Letter,” a piece by Wayne Carson Thompson that will feature choral education and jazz studies major Lexie Lakmann, Onalaska, on vocals.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, $5 for UW-Stevens Point students, faculty and youth and free the day of the concert for students with a UW-Stevens Point I.D. if not sold out.
