Metro Wire Staff

An exhibit honoring the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos is on display at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The exhibit, presented by the UW-Stevens Point Multicultural Resource Center and the Edna Carlsten Art Gallery, is free and open to the public from Oct. 29 to Nov. 7 in the Noel Fine Arts Center’s Carlsten Gallery, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. The gallery is open from noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

A reception featuring an ofrenda, or altar, will be held in the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday where families create ofrendas to honor deceased loved ones. The altars are typically decorated with marigold flowers, photographs, and the favorite foods and drinks of the deceased. The offerings are meant to welcome the souls of the dead, encouraging them to join in the celebration.

The Edna Carlsten Art Gallery regularly hosts exhibits featuring local, national, and international artists, as well as community events. The gallery is equipped with ceiling-mounted projectors and a sound system, creating a versatile space for exhibitions.
