UWSP named ‘College of Distinction’ for 25-26

STEVENS POINT — The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been named a 2025-26 College of Distinction, a national designation recognizing schools that provide strong undergraduate learning experiences through engaged teaching, campus involvement and student support.

The recognition is awarded by Colleges of Distinction, an organization that evaluates colleges based on four key areas: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.

According to the organization, UW-Stevens Point earned the designation because of its focus on experiential learning opportunities, including undergraduate research, internships, collaborative projects and other hands-on educational experiences.

“UW-Stevens Point has crafted a campus culture where students are empowered to take ownership of their learning,” Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction, said in a statement. “Its programs reflect the kind of innovation and intentionality that prepare students for life after graduation.”

Unlike many college rankings that emphasize selectivity, test scores or institutional prestige, Colleges of Distinction focuses on the quality of the undergraduate experience and the impact schools have on students during their time on campus.

Interim Chancellor Pratima Gandhi said student engagement plays a key role in academic success and a sense of belonging.

“UW-Stevens Point offers experiential learning as well as a wide variety of opportunities through student organizations, athletics, research, campus employment and community building,” Gandhi said. “Our faculty and staff encourage our students to be actively involved in their learning and campus life to ensure their success.”

Schritter said the organization’s goal is to highlight institutions that help students develop both academically and personally.

“We’ve never believed in ranking schools,” Schritter said. “Our goal is to celebrate institutions that help students find their place, their purpose, and their potential. UWSP stands out for creating an environment where students thrive not just academically, but as whole people.”

In addition to the overall designation, UW-Stevens Point received recognition for affordability and transfer-friendly policies, as well as academic programs in business, education, engineering and nursing.

Colleges of Distinction has recognized colleges and universities across the United States since 2000 based on their commitment to providing a strong undergraduate education and student-centered learning environment.
