Metro Wire Staff

Theatre, arts, and podcast camps will be offered online for youth and adults in May and June by UW-Stevens Point Continuing Education.

Kids ages 8-16 will have their chance to shine in Virtual Theatre Camp’s “The Show Must Go Online,” May 26-June 12 or June 15-July 2. The new musical is designed to be rehearsed and performed remotely. Each actor will receive a scene or song to rehearse, record, and upload.

When all played in order, the videos will tell the “hilarious story of a group of passionate students desperate to keep their annual musical alive online,” according to a news release from Continuing Education.

Led by UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield Theatre Director Brad Schmicker, “The Show Must Go Online” is a three-week camp with a minimum of two virtual class sessions per week focusing on theatrical skills, drama games, enhancing the actors’ performances, props, costumes, and other show details. The cost is $35 per student.

UW-Stevens Point also is offering Point Makers Camp online June 8-13 for high school students and adults. Participants will explore multiple ways of “making,” including, drawing, storytelling, printmaking, and designing symbols and patterns. They will channel their individuality into original works of visual art and design. At the conclusion of camp, the original artwork will be displayed in a virtual online gallery. Participants can sign up for one class for $95 or multiple classes and receive a discount. The registration deadline is June 5.

The Point Podcast camp will be held online from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 15-19 for high school students and adults.

For this hands-on approach to how podcasts are created, participants will examine a range of podcasts before creating one of their own. Topics will include listening, research, reading, textual analysis, planning, writing, sound editing, and peer- and self-evaluation. Equipment needed includes a smartphone for audio recording, basic audio editing software (free download), and an Internet connection. UW-Stevens Point Media Professor Mark Tolstedt will lead the camp. The cost is $245, including a $50 deposit. Register by June 12.
