UW-Stevens Point to offer planetarium shows in October

STEVENS POINT — The Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will host planetarium shows each Sunday in October at 2 p.m.
The free, public programs will last approximately one hour, featuring a 25-minute presentation about the current night sky in central Wisconsin, including stars, constellations, and planets. Donations are welcome to support the continuation of these programs.
The schedule is as follows:
- Oct. 13: “Night of the Titanic” – Learn about ocean currents, iceberg formation, and global warming through the lens of the Titanic disaster.
- Oct. 20: “The Sun, Our Living Star” – View never-before-seen images of the Sun’s surface and uncover the secrets of our star.
- Oct. 27: “Mars: The Ultimate Voyage” – Witness what it takes to undertake the first human mission beyond Earth’s orbit.
A special Junior Scientist program, “Magic Globe, A Story of the Seasons,” will be offered on Oct. 27 from 3:40 to 4:10 p.m. A book reading at 3 p.m. will precede the planetarium show. This program is presented in collaboration with the UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History.
Planetarium seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, with capacity limited to 55 people. Groups of eight or more can request a private showing by calling 715-346-2208 or completing an online request form. A fee is required for special group showings.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the UW-Stevens Point Science Building, 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. Free parking is available in Lot D behind the building after 7 p.m. and on weekends.
Stargazing sessions will be offered Monday through Wednesday evenings, from 8:30 to 10 p.m., on Colman Field at the corner of Maria and Reserve Streets. Sessions will be held only when skies are clear and temperatures are above 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the department’s website for weather updates.
