UW-Stevens Point, Sentry name leadership center after Ruth E. Salzmann

STEVENS POINT – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Sentry Insurance announced Tuesday the naming of the Ruth E. Salzmann Center for Women’s Leadership, honoring Sentry’s first female executive vice president and a trailblazer in the insurance industry.

The announcement was made at Sentry’s Stevens Point headquarters. The center, housed in the Sentry School of Business and Economics at UWSP, was first established in 2022 to support emerging leaders in business, nonprofits, and community organizations.
Salzmann broke barriers more than 60 years ago, becoming the first woman president of the International Casualty Actuarial Society as well as Sentry’s first female vice president and board member. She later earned recognition as one of the top 100 women in business by Business Insurance magazine.
“The center is a beacon for students and emerging leaders who will now have the chance to learn about and apply the timeless lessons and values of Ruth’s legacy,” said UWSP Interim Chancellor Pratima Gandhi. “The university is grateful for this $250,000 gift from Sentry to name the center in Ruth’s honor and empower women and their allies.”
Salzmann’s contributions shaped the insurance industry. Her “Salzmann Curves” guided property insurance pricing for more than four decades, and her actuarial research became required reading for students nationwide. She also authored papers, worked as a consultant and expert witness, and served as a mentor in her field.
“Ruth wasn’t focused on being ‘the first,’ she was focused on getting it right,” said Pete McPartland, Sentry chairman and CEO. “Her analytical mind, quick wit, and professionalism moved our industry forward. Her values and influence continue to shape insurance and now will be felt in the broader business world.”
McPartland recalled a personal connection with Salzmann after joining Sentry in 2010. “Through our discussions, I came to understand not just what she accomplished, but who she was,” he said. “Ruth’s insight and perspective shaped how I lead today.”
Stephanie Smith, president of the Sentry Insurance Foundation, said the center embodies Salzmann’s values: forward-thinking, principled, and empowering. “She would be pleased to know her career and life have influenced and inspired others and will continue to do so for years to come,” Smith said.
The center provides leadership development, education, networking, mentorship, and opportunities that bridge campus and community. It is open to all students and community members interested in learning from women leaders.
“With programming initiatives already underway, the Ruth E. Salzmann Center for Women’s Leadership will serve as a cornerstone of growth and empowerment at UWSP,” said Leah Bertrand, a student in the MBA program and an intern at the center. “Ruth’s legacy as a trailblazer inspires the work I am proud to be part of.”
The center will be featured during the Women Trailblazers Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at UWSP. The conference showcases founders, entrepreneurs, professionals, artists, and students from across sectors.
Sentry Hall, which will house the center, is expected to open in 2029.
