UW-Stevens Point planetarium announces February showings

STEVENS POINT — The Allen F. Blocher Planetarium at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is offering free public showings this February, giving visitors an opportunity to explore galaxies, black holes, and the mysteries of space.
Planetarium shows will be held at 2 p.m. on Sundays, featuring a 25-minute presentation on the current night sky of Central Wisconsin. Each program runs approximately one hour. While admission is free, donations are encouraged to support future events.
The February lineup includes:
- Feb. 2 – “Supermassive Black Holes: Uncovering the Invisible” – Learn about the formation of black holes and their role in galaxy evolution.
- Feb. 9 – “Mysteries of Your Brain” – An animated exploration of the human brain and its complexities.
- Feb. 16 – “Forward – To the Moon” – Join Kari Byron from “MythBusters” to explore NASA’s plans for future lunar missions.
- Feb. 23 – “The Dark Matter Mystery: Exploring a Cosmic Secret” – A scientific journey into dark matter and its role in holding the universe together.
Additionally, two Junior Scientist programs, designed for younger audiences, will be offered from 3:40 to 4:10 p.m. following a book reading at 3 p.m. These sessions are presented in collaboration with the UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History:
- Jan. 26 – “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure” – A family-friendly adventure featuring “Sesame Street” characters learning about celestial landmarks.
- Feb. 23 – “Tilt” – A story about how Earth’s tilt affects the day-night cycle and seasons, told through the eyes of two kids and a robot.
The planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building at 2001 Fourth Ave. Seating is available for up to 55 guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of eight or more can arrange special showings by calling 715-346-2208 or submitting an online request, though fees apply for these requests.
Parking is free in university lots after 7 p.m. and on weekends, with Lot D behind the building offering the closest access. Stargazing sessions will also be available Monday through Wednesday evenings from 8:30 to 10 p.m. on Colman Field, weather permitting. Clear skies and temperatures above 15 degrees Fahrenheit are required for the viewings to proceed.
