UW-Stevens Point museum wolf mount recovered
For the Metro Wire
A stuffed timber wolf mount reported stolen from the UWSP Museum of Natural History in May has been recovered.
The mount was found on a Schmeeckle Reserve trail on the morning of July 8.
University Police Chief Tony Babl reported the wolf appeared to have been placed there early that day and was in good condition. A note was found under its paw about “running away.”
Anyone with information about the theft, or return, of this popular museum specimen, is asked to contact UW-Stevens Point Police Department at (715) 346-3456.
Museum Director Ray Reser said he was “thrilled” to have the wolf mount back. He obtained the young male wolf in 2011 from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources after it was hit by a car in Shawano County.
Museum visitors were devastated when it disappeared, he said.
Additional security measures have been taken at the museum, where the wolf mount is again on display.
