A free lecture is being offered on how water laws impact safe drinking water.
“Clean Water, Safe Water: The Basics of How Water Laws Impact What You Drink” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, presented by Brad Mapes-Martins, a professor in the UW-Stevens Point Department of Political Science.
The talk will be held in the Pinery Room of the Portage County Public Library, 1001 Main St., Stevens Point. It’s the eighth and final talk in the 2018-2019 Community Lecture Series held by UWSP. The public is invited to attend.
“In the 1960s and ’70s, federal and state laws were written to protect and improve water quality,” said Mapes-Martins, who added a “patchwork of laws” has since been installed which impacts water from municipal suppliers and private wells.
Mapes-Martins earned his bachelor’s degree from The Evergreen State College and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Political Theory, Political Theory and Democratic Engagement, Environmental Policy, and Introduction to American Politics.
