UW-Stevens Point announces new leaders for conservation centers

STEVENS POINT — The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources has appointed new leaders for three key UW-Extension centers, strengthening its commitment to conservation education, research, and community outreach.

Steven Hubbard has been named director of the Wisconsin Forestry Center and a UW-Extension forestry specialist. Hubbard, who holds a Ph.D. in forestry and wood products from UW-Madison, has extensive experience in forest management, product lifecycle assessment, and consulting. As director, he will focus on advancing sustainable forest management practices, promoting innovative research, and engaging with community stakeholders.

Kevin Masarik has been appointed director of the Center for Watershed Science and Education and a UW-Extension water specialist. Masarik, with more than 20 years of experience at UW-Stevens Point and the UW-Madison Division of Extension, has worked extensively on improving Wisconsin’s water resources and public health. His expertise in water quality management, particularly in rural communities with private wells, has expanded well testing from 1,500 to over 8,000 annually, directly impacting residents’ health and well-being.

Professor Jason Riddle will serve as the Douglas R. Stephens Chair in Wildlife and has been named director of the Wisconsin Center for Wildlife as a UW-Extension wildlife specialist. Riddle has been involved in wildlife ecology research and education since 2009, with a focus on habitat optimization for quail and early-succession songbirds. His innovative approach to wildlife conservation aims to expand the center’s programs and outreach efforts.

“These leadership changes reflect UW-Stevens Point’s dedication to advancing conservation education and sustainability initiatives across Wisconsin,” said Brian Sloss, dean of the College of Natural Resources. The appointments also highlight the partnership with the UW-Madison Division of Extension, demonstrating a strong outreach mission and commitment to the Wisconsin Idea.

“We are excited to welcome Steven, Kevin, and Jason into their new leadership roles,” Sloss said. “Their expertise and dedication to conservation and outreach will strengthen our programs and further the Wisconsin Idea. We are confident their leadership will enhance our college’s impact on natural resource management, education, and community engagement across the state.”
