Stevens Point police say they have taken two men in custody following a drug investigation at Point Motel on Thursday.

Working on a tip, officers from SPPD searched rooms #30 and #41 at Point Motel, 209 Division St., on the morning of Oct. 22. Both rooms were identified as having been involved in manufacturing methamphetamine.

William Varga, 37, and 27-year-old Kyle S. Amundson, were taken into custody on a probation hold. Both are facing initial charges of possession of methamphetamine, according to Lt. Dana Williams, with more charges likely.

Portage Co. Health and Human Services was also called to the scene after police found a 4-month-old child in one of the rooms, Williams said.

“Per hazmat guidelines and protocols, we prepared to evacuate the whole building if needed,” Williams said. “Further investigation determined that a smaller evacuation was needed. As a result, two current tenants were displaced and given vouchers to stay at a different local hotel.”

The Stevens Point Police Department was assisted by the Stevens Point Fire Department, Stevens Point Transit Department, Stevens Point Community Development Department, Plover Police Department, Plover Fire Department, UWSP Police and Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
