TOWN OF PLOVER – Three people were injured Thursday morning when a pickup truck struck a tree on an ice-covered stretch of Highway 54, according to the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and multiple first responders were called to the scene at 438 Hwy. 54, in front of Green Tree Storage, shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 6. Authorities said several passing motorists reported the crash.

Chief Deputy Ben Beaudoin said the truck was driven by a 22-year-old man from Plover. His wife, believed to be 27, and their 6-year-old daughter were passengers.

The pickup was heading west on Highway 54 when it lost control on the slippery road about two-tenths of a mile west of Coolidge Avenue. The vehicle entered the north ditch and struck a tree on the driver’s side, Beaudoin said.

Emergency crews found the truck with significant roof damage. Plover firefighters extricated all three occupants, who were transported by ambulance to various hospitals. Authorities initially called for two medical helicopters, but none of the victims were flown.

Beaudoin said all three were receiving treatment as of Thursday afternoon.

Responding agencies included Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, Portage County Ambulance, Plover Fire Rescue, Plover police, Portage County Highway Department, and Plover Emergency Medical Responders.

Deputies said the roadway was covered in “glare ice” as they responded to the crash.
