STEVENS POINT — A Plover man remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on the city’s north side last week.
The crash occurred at 8:06 p.m. on April 29 at Michigan Avenue and Maria Drive. Stevens Point police finally released the initial crash report on May 6.
According to the report, a 46-year-old man from Baraboo was driving a gray SUV northbound on Michigan Ave. when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign at Maria Dr. and struck the 55-year-old bicyclist, who was crossing the intersection in the painted crosswalk.
A patrol sergeant from SPPD witnessed the crash and was on scene when it occurred. His squad vehicle’s dash camera captured the collision, which is still being reviewed by investigators.
The driver initially told officers he had looked both ways before entering the intersection, but later admitted he may have been playing a game on his phone. He said that when he looked up, it was too late to stop, according to the report.
The video reportedly shows the driver attempting to swerve to avoid the bicyclist, who had been riding on the sidewalk before entering the crosswalk, but the cyclist was struck.
The bicyclist sustained suspected life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The SUV sustained disabling front-end damage and was towed from the scene.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is conducting accident reconstruction.
As of May 7, Stevens Point Police Chief Bob Kussow said the incident remains under investigation, so no possible citations or charges have yet been issued.
