United Way, Community Foundation establish COVID-19 relief fund

By Patrick Lynn

The United Way of Portage County and the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin have joined forces to help those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizations this week each committed $20,000 to start the Portage County COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Sentry Insurance and Delta Dental of Wisconsin have also taken steps to participate, making “generous donations” to the fund, though a news release from the United Way did not give the amount.

The Relief Fund is intended to provide flexible resources to organizations that assist individuals who are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and the economic consequences of the outbreak, with 100 percent of the money raised going towards local assistance.

“It is heart-warming to see how the community is rallying together during this critical time—individuals and companies alike,” said Sue Wilcox, executive director of the United Way. “Sentry and Delta Dental are no exception. They are pillars of generosity in this community and we are humbled by their contribution.”

Any individuals in need of assistance should call the free and confidential United Way 211 helpline to be connected to resources available in the community. Hmong and Spanish translators are available.

Community members are encouraged to join this effort by donating online at www.unitedwaypoco.org/donate. Checks can be mailed to United Way of Portage County at 1100 Centerpoint Dr. #302 (ATTN: PCCRF), Stevens Point, Wis. 54481.
