For the Metro Wire

A longtime intern with United Way of Portage County recently joined the staff as a full-time employee.

Kelly Skeels, who served as an intern for United Way for the past four summers, was hired as Administrative and Community Services Program Specialist. This role includes various administrative tasks such as greeting visitors and providing United Way information.

Skeels’ role also includes coordinating United Way’s Learn for Life program. She will recruit, supervise and train tutors while utilizing evaluation tools for assessing the success of the program. This also involves coordinating Summer Sizzle reading events and working with community volunteers. She served as a Learn for Life intern during the summer of 2017, and previously served as a Project Fresh Start intern during the summers of 2014, 2015, and 2016. She also worked on the GIVE & GET UNITED Coupon Book during her 2017 internship.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such a dedicated team in a community I love,” said Skeels, a Plover native and 2017 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. “Working full-time with United Way gives me the privilege to truly make a difference in Portage County.”

United Way also announced it is promoting Laura Pfeil from Community Services Manager to Resource Development Administrator. In her new role, Pfeil will support and enhance resource development initiatives and will help oversee the United Way Endowment.

Pfeil has been with United Way for six years, overseeing Learn for Life and the No Child’s Wet Behind community diaper drive and had a role with the Volunteer Center.

“I cannot in words express the joy that the last six years spent with Learn for Life has brought me,” said Pfeil. “The connection it has given me to the community, and those involved, cannot be measured. I am honored by the new opportunity to serve our community in a new and exciting way and to continue to make an impact through United Way.”
