Surprise: Traffic signals on Hoover Road installed, begin flash mode

STEVENS POINT — New traffic signals at Hoover Road’s intersections with Industrial Park Road and Coye Drive are now in place and began flashing red Monday evening, according to a late-day Facebook post from the city’s Public Works Department.
The contractor installed the signals Sept. 29, with the city announcing online just after 4 p.m. that the lights would go live that evening. The department said the intersections will remain in flashing red for about a week, creating a four-way stop while crews complete the installation of detection systems.
The announcement went out on the department’s Facebook page a little after 4 p.m. on Sept. 29, though Public Works Director Scott Beduhn said he didn’t immediately know why a press release wasn’t sent to the media last week.
Once that work is done, the lights will switch to full operation.
The project is part of the city’s $467,880 Hoover Road Signalization Project, awarded in March 2to Bodart Electric Service, Inc., of De Pere. City leaders have said the signals are needed to improve safety and traffic flow on the east side.
Council members strongly backed the project when it was approved. District 3 Councilwoman Ginger Keymer said she’d heard from “many constituents about the need,” and District 8 Councilman Dean Shuda called it a “much-needed project.”
Hoover Road remains open during construction, but drivers should expect intermittent lane closures and short delays.
