Sunset Point Winery to close Nov. 1

STEVENS POINT — Sunset Point Winery, a downtown fixture for more than a decade, will close its doors this fall, owners Kelly and Don Guay announced Monday.

The winery will close at the end of the business day Nov. 1, according to a letter released by the owners.

Sunset Point Winery officially opened to the public July 3, 2015. At the time, there was nothing quite like it in the area, and the business would later become part of broader efforts to spur improvements in downtown Stevens Point.

The closure is the latest in a string of recent departures from downtown. Fall Line Outfitters, Turquoise on Main and Erbert & Gerbert’s have all closed in recent months, each for different reasons.

The Guays said their decision to close Sunset Point came as they prepare to move into the next chapter of their lives.

“The primary reason for this closure is that we, as owners, are ready to focus on the next chapter in our lives,” they said. “While saying goodbye to the winery is bittersweet, we do so with full hearts and lasting appreciation for everyone who has helped make Sunset Point Winery what it has become.”

The owners thanked customers who supported the winery over the years, along with local businesses, organizations, growers, vendors, musicians and other partners.

They specifically thanked the city of Stevens Point, Craft Collective, Wisconsin Winery Association and Rock Ridge Vineyard for their support.

“Sunset Point Winery has always been about more than wine,” the Guays said. “It has been about gathering, connection, hospitality, and community.”

The winery will remain open through Nov. 1, and the Guays encouraged customers to visit during its remaining months.

“We hope you will stop in during our remaining months to visit, share a story, and help us close this chapter in the same spirit of friendship and community that has defined it from the beginning,” they said.
