Stevens Point to explain two major street projects at public meeting
By Brandi Makuski
STEVENS POINT – City officials will hold a public preconstruction meeting on April 23 to provide details on two major road reconstruction projects scheduled for 2025.
The meeting runs from 5 to 7 p.m. in the conference room at the City Streets Garage, 100 Sixth Ave. Officials will present updates on the Washington Ave. and Madison St. improvement projects. Residents, business owners, and other interested parties are encouraged to attend.
Both projects include full replacement of surface elements—such as road pavement, sidewalks, curbs and gutters—as well as underground utilities including water main, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer. The aging infrastructure has reached the end of its service life, city engineers say.
Washington Avenue: storm sewer laterals and narrowed streets
For Washington Avenue, the city plans to add storm sewer laterals to each adjacent property. Some blocks, such as West Street between Franklin and Washington, may be added as alternate bids depending on final costs. The city will also evaluate installing new curbs and gutters in areas that currently lack them. In some segments, the overall roadway width may be slightly reduced, and a new sidewalk is proposed where none exists.
Madison Street: sidewalk infill and alternate bid segments
Similar work is planned for Madison Street, though city staff do not anticipate installing new storm sewer laterals as part of that project. As with Washington Avenue, sidewalk infill and narrower roadway widths are planned in some areas. Two segments—Wyatt Avenue from Madison to Dixon and East Avenue from Madison to Dixon—will be considered as alternate bids.
Construction for both projects is expected to begin in April and continue through November 2025. While the majority of funding comes from the city’s capital improvement program, adjacent property owners may see assessments for new storm sewer laterals or new curb and gutter installations where none currently exist.
City officials say property access, driveway closures, and service interruptions will be communicated ahead of time. Residents are encouraged to share concerns about parking, mobility needs, and drainage issues during the meeting.
