Stevens Point seeks input for replacement mural at Rivermen site

STEVENS POINT – After more than two decades, the Rivermen Mural near the corner of Clark and Third streets is coming down due to significant structural deterioration, and city leaders are asking the public to help decide what should take its place.
The mural, completed in 2004 on the west-facing brick wall at 817 Clark St., has begun to separate from the underlying structure. Officials say years of harsh Wisconsin winters have caused the plaster-like surface to pull away from the original clay brick wall, prompting immediate removal for safety reasons.
“While it’s sad to have to remove the deteriorated mural that has stood for more than 20 years, one of more than a dozen that have become well known in our community,” said Mayor Mike Wiza in a Tuesday press release. “We now have an opportunity to ensure the view when entering our city from the west is one that will be attractive for the next 20 years.”
The original mural was funded through private donations, including a creative campaign in which community members could pay to have their faces included as part of the painted Rivermen. Artist Kelly Meredith painted the foundation and outlined the major figures before community volunteers completed the rest using a “paint-by-number” method.
While the current property owner has expressed interest in reinstalling a new mural once repairs are complete, the city is inviting the community to weigh in on what the replacement artwork might be. Wiza said the city will collect suggestions and proposals while repairs are underway.
“We could recreate the Rivermen, or we could do something different,” Wiza said. “We want to know what the community wants to see.”
The city also intends to work with interested groups on fundraising for the new mural. Wiza noted that mural technology has improved in recent years, potentially allowing for a new installation that lasts longer and doesn’t damage the wall.
Ideas, proposals, and donations for the replacement mural can be submitted to the Mayor’s Office at City Hall. Wiza’s office can be reached at [email protected] or 715-346-1570.
