Stevens Point Police Department swears in 297th officer

STEVENS POINT — The Stevens Point Police Department swore in its 297th officer Monday during a ceremony at the department.

Dylan Messacar, 22, officially joined the department as a probationary police officer effective May 18. The ceremony was held in front of several officers from multiple departments, along with Messacar’s family and fiancée.

Police Chief Ed Orgon said law enforcement careers rely heavily on strong support systems both at work and at home.

“We cannot do our job or be successful at this job if we don’t have an incredible support system here in the department or in our home,” Orgon said. “I want to thank Dylan’s family and friends for supporting him in his decision.”

Messacar grew up in Metamora, Illinois, near Peoria, and graduated from high school in 2022. Earlier this month, he earned a degree in conservation law enforcement from UW-Stevens Point. He also completed the 720-hour law enforcement academy at Mid-State Technical College in 2025.

Orgon said Messacar initially planned to pursue conservation law enforcement but shifted toward traditional policing during his academy training.

References described Messacar as respectful, hardworking, trustworthy, and calm under pressure, Orgon said.

“They stated that Dylan had a good head on his shoulders,” Orgon said. “Dylan, I’m excited to see what the future holds for you.”

City Clerk Susan Pagel administered the oath of office while Assistant Chief Dana Williams helped lead the event.

After taking the oath, Messacar thanked the department and his supporters.

“I’m hoping for a long career here,” Messacar said. “I’d like to thank my family and friends who have helped me through everything.”

According to Orgon, the department now boasts a complement of 44 officers. Following recent retirements and exits, the department is in the process of hiring three additional officers.
