Stevens Point area basketball teams pick up big wins on Friday night

By Craig Marx

With the SPASH girls picking up a big-time win against Merrill on Friday at home 84-17, the Panther boys team also defeated the Bluejays on the road 71-63.

SPASH’s James Jacobs led the team with 25 points as the Panthers held off a late Bluejays surge to secure a Wisconsin Valley Conference win and move to 2-4 overall on the year thus far.

The SPASH boys have two more WVC games remaining before the holiday break heading into the Sentry Classic, including a home matchup against DC Everest on Dec. 21 at 7:15  p.m. (a Metro Wire game of the night) and a road trip to Wisconsin Rapids on Dec. 23. Tip-off begins against the Red Raiders at 1 p.m.

In Central Wisconsin South girls basketball action, the Pacelli Cardinals remain undefeated for the season at 6-0 overall following a 39-33 win over Pittsville on Friday evening.

A rarity of a close game this season for the Lady Cardinals, Pacelli sits on top of the conference with one more conference game to play before Christmas and the Sentry Classic.

The Cardinals travel to Iola-Scandinavia on Dec. 21 for a 7 p.m. matchup that is coincidentally followed up with a first-round bout against the Thunderbirds once again to begin the Sentry Classic on Dec. 28.

The Sentry Classic game tips off at 12:45 p.m. at UW-Stevens Point.
