Stanley J. Mijal, 95

Stanley J. Mijal of Stevens Point died Saturday afternoon, April 7, 2018 at the Portage County Health Care Center while under the care of Ministry Hospice Home Care and surrounded by his loving family.

Stanley was born June 9, 1922 in the Town of Ringle. He was the son of the late Walter and Julia (Maziar) Mijal. Stanley attended schools in Marathon County.

Stan moved to Milwaukee and went to work at the Nash plant, learning the trade of Auto Body Repair. Stanley accepted the call of his country in September of 1943, during WWII, and was a member of the 749th Tank Battalion, Company C in the U.S. Army. During the D-Day invasion, he landed on Omaha Beach.

While in France, he was wounded, received the Purple Heart and just last year received the National Order of the Legion Honour, the highest medal bestowed by the Government of France for his excellent military conduct.

His marriage to Lillian Sondelski took place on November 15, 1947 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Mosinee. After their marriage the couple moved to Chicago, where he continued to hone the craft of auto body repair at several shops before returning to the Town of Hull in 1950.

Stan and Lillian were making their future plans and while setting his goals, became a body technician for G.A. Gullikson Chevy until he opened Stan’s Body Shop in 1958. He operated the business until his retirement in 1984.

Stanley loved auctions, the outdoors, Polka music, restoring old cars (especially 1932 Ford’s), building Doodle Bugs, hunting and the annual trip to Canada fishing with Lillian. His most precious time was being with his family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Badger Honor Flight.

Stanley is survived by his four children; Sharon (Ron) Omernick, Mike (Linda) Mijal both of Stevens Point and Thomas (Sandra) Mijal of Kronenwetter and Jeffrey (Grace) Mijal of Stevens Point.
His nine grandchildren; Lynn, Chris, Samuel, Katrina, Rebecca, James, Katie, Michael and Shane, and his nine great grandchildren Maximus, Evie May, Alenah, Sonnah, Kadin, Claira, Shelby, Lacie and Stephanie; three sisters, Lucy (Joe) Muszynosky, Florence (Gerald) Ziegel and Annie Strehlow; sister-in-law, Rose Ann Mijal; numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian in September of 2017; two grandchildren Lori and Joshua; his siblings, Eleanor (Felix) Groshek, Micky (Bernice) Mijal, Edward (Ceil) Mijal, Joseph Mijal, Jean (Stan) Pierzchzlski, John (Kay) Mijal, Helen (Leon) Sondelski and Tony (Pat) Mijal.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018 at St. Casimir Catholic Church in the Town of Hull. Rev. Dennis Stanchek officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Casimir Parish Cemetery with military honors. Family and friends may call from 9 a.m. Thursday morning at St. Casimir Church until the time for mass. The Pisarski Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Mijal family.
