Standing Rocks course named for SPASH XC coach
By Patrick Lynn
STOCKTON — The cross-country course at Standing Rocks Park has been officially dedicated in honor of Pat Leahy, a longtime SPASH assistant coach and teacher.
The dedication took place Saturday, Sept. 14, recognizing Leahy’s contributions to the sport and community. The press was not invited to the event.
Leahy, assistant coach for SPASH boys cross-country and track and field, is credited with designing the course and spearheading its approval, maintenance, and ongoing use for meets. His efforts, in collaboration with the parks department, helped establish the venue as a premier course for SPASH and Amherst High School teams.
When not in use for competitions, the course serves as a popular hiking trail for the community, further extending Leahy’s impact.
“We are incredibly grateful for Pat’s vision and determination in creating this course,” said Stevens Point School District Superintendent Craig Hirsbrunner. “His work has not only benefited our students but has provided a wonderful resource for our entire community.”
Leahy, also a teacher at the Portage County Juvenile Detention Center, was celebrated for his commitment to education, athletics, and community involvement.
The course, now a fixture in the region, serves as a reminder of his perseverance and collaboration.
