SPASH girls soccer downs Marshfield

The SPASH girls soccer team took a 5-1 win over visiting Marshfield in Wisconsin Valley Conference action Tuesday night. The Panthers stand at 2-0 in the WVC.

Marshfield struck first finding the back of the net at the 39:31 mark of the first period. Nina Hashimoto put the Tigers up 1-0 with the assist to Kathryn Schilling.

The Panthers knotted the game 1-1 at the 28:57 mark of the period when junior Abby Gemza hit a booming shot from near midfield unassisted.

“We started slow against Marshfield,” said Gemza. “This is something we’ve been trying to improve on, getting off to a stronger start.”

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break when senior forward Kaylin Kostuchowski scored at the 13:06 mark off the assist from Grace Smith.

“As the first half unfolded we got much stronger with our play, started connecting with our feet and the goals started to come. We looked like a team,” said Gemza who finished the night with two goals and an assist.

Junior midfielder Lauren Johnson picked up the first of her two goals lighting up the board at the 36:22 mark of the second half off the assist from Gemza. Johnson found the net again at the 10:25 mark of the period unassisted and Gemza rounded out the scoring with 7:35 remaining on an unassisted shot from nearly 50 yards out.

The Panthers put 19 shots on net.

SPASH will take the field at Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, May 15. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
