STEVENS POINT — Mike Olson, the longtime head coach of the Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) girls cross country team, has announced his resignation, marking the end of an extraordinary 45-year career.
Olson, who began coaching the program in 1980, is widely regarded as the most accomplished coach in SPASH girls cross country history. Under his leadership, the Panthers earned 23 conference titles, qualified for the state meet 27 times, and won three WIAA state championships in 1986, 2002, and 2003.
His achievements extend beyond team accolades. Olson was inducted into the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005 and holds a distinguished place in the SPASH Hall of Fame. The state championship teams from 1986, 2002, and 2003 are also enshrined in the school’s Hall of Fame, underscoring the lasting impact of Olson’s tenure.
Reflecting on his career, Olson said, “It has been my honor to serve as the head coach for the past 45 years. During that time, I have coached hundreds of athletes with varying levels of talent. My top priority has always been to ensure that each girl on the team felt valued, both by the team and myself, regardless of their talent level. I take pride in each of those young ladies who strived to be their best, for both themselves and the team.”
Olson also credited his assistant coaches for their role in the program’s success. “I have had the privilege of sharing my coaching duties with numerous talented and dedicated assistants. Without their contributions, we would not have achieved the level of success we have enjoyed throughout the years,” he said.
David Hauser, SPASH athletics director, praised Olson’s contributions to the school and community. “I want to thank Coach Olson for his efforts, dedication, and service to the girls cross country program and SPASH Athletics,” Hauser said. “He is an incredible coach and an extremely hard worker. We have been fortunate to have him with us, as he is a tremendous asset to SPASH, the Stevens Point Area Public School District, and the community.”
Olson’s resignation marks the conclusion of an era for SPASH Athletics, leaving a legacy of excellence that will resonate for years to come.
