It’s one of the most popular book sales in Portage Co.

The annual book sale sponsored by the Stevens Point Area Retired Teachers’ Association (SPARTA) returns Aug. 10-13. This year, the sale will be held at the Holiday Inn and Convention Center, 1001 Amber Ave. in Stevens Point.

The sale will not be taking donations this year, according to co-organizer David Blado, a former social studies teacher at P.J. Jacob’s Jr. High.

Over 400 boxes of books, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles will be up for sale. To encourage summer reading, Blado said children’s books will be priced at $0.25 for softcovers and $0.50 for hardcovers.

Most books cost $1 or less. DVDs are $2 per disk, CDs $1, and puzzles $2 to $3, he said.

Profits from the sale benefit the community by funding scholarships and grants. Acting for SPARTA, the Community Foundation of Central Wisconsin awards two scholarships annually to students embarking on careers in education. SPARTA also provides grants to local organizations providing services to the elderly, children, and their families.

Hours of the sale follow:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 10, noon to 7 p.m.,
  • Thursday, Aug. 11, and Friday, Aug. 12, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
