Southpoint Family Restaurant reopens

A mainstay of the city’s south side reopened Friday morning.

Southpoint Family Restaurant opened at 6 a.m. on May 31 after being closed over a month following a kitchen fire. Restaurants owners had to replace a grill, and custom space requirements kept the doors shut for about five weeks.

The restaurant closed April 23 after a minor fire in the kitchen. Lt. David Briggs from the Stevens Point Fire Department said the cause of the fire appeared to be an accumulation of grease on the stovetop that was “disrupted by a boilover of water.” The fire was not suspicious, he said.

Patrons quickly filled the tiny diner on Friday morning, and the parking lot was almost full by 6:45 a.m.
