Both locations of the Plover Fire Department will take donations of lightly-used shoes for an upcoming 9/11 memorial ceremony.
Fire Chief Mark Deaver said new or used shoes or boots are needed for the 20th-anniversary program for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Fire departments across Central Wisconsin are collecting 351 pairs of shoes to represent the 343 firefighters and eight EMTs who lost their lives on 9/11.
A program honoring those 351 souls will be held at the Wisconsin Firefighters & EMS Memorial, 2031 Second Ave. South, in Wisconsin Rapids, at noon. The program is open to the public.
The shoes will be delivered to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King in Waupaca, and possibly area shelters, after the ceremony.
The Plover Fire Department will also hold its 9/11 memorial program at 8:46 a.m.—the time of the first airplane strike on the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
The village’s program will be held on Sept. 11, 2021, at the 9/11 Memorial in front of Village Hall, 2400 Post Rd.
