Sheriff: Crash reports now available online

Metro Wire Staff

Traffic crash reports from the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office are now available online.

Copies of crash reports dating back to July 20, 2017, are available free of charge, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Reports can be accessed by date, the name of the individual involved, or agency case number/report number.

“Online accident report distribution reduces the need for law  enforcement to handle administrative tasks associated with locating, copying, and distributing accident reports,” Sheriff Mike Lukas said. “This frees up public safety staff to provide more relevant services to the county.”

The crash reports are public documents, he added, and are available to the public under state and federal law.

Requests can still be made for crash documents through the sheriff’s office, but delays and processing fees may be involved, he said.

Reports are available at http://www.crashdocs.org.
