Sex offender convicted on child porn scheduled for release

A convicted sex offender is scheduled for release from prison on Jan. 21.

According to a news release on Thursday, 49-year-old Scott E. Szerlong, will reside at 1504 Water St. under supervision by the Wisconsin Dept. of Corrections. Szerlong will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry.

Szerlong was convicted in 2017 on 18 counts of possession of child pornography, as well as charges of fraud, forgery, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Szerlong was arrested at a Stevens Point motel in May of 2014. While searching for evidence of forgery, drugs, and receiving stolen property, officers found 35 pornographic images of children as young as four years old on his phone and computer. At the time, Szerlong had nine open files in Portage, Wood, and Marathon counties with numerous forgery and bad check charges, and methamphetamine possession in addition to the 35 separate child porn possession charges.

He had also been tied to vehicle thefts, a burglary at B&D Equipment in Hatley, and a separate Marathon County child porn charge.

Conditions of his release include electronic monitoring, and he is prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with minors or consuming illegal drugs.
