Schulfer marks first decade of successful shredding parties

By Patrick Lynn

It was a rainy day in September when Schulfer & Associates held its 20202 Shredding Party, with organizers say set a number of milestones.

Cementing a decade of annual fundraisers, the Shredding Party this year surpassed last year’s event by $1,000, according to LouAnn Schulfer, co-owner of the financial management business.

The event raised a total of $5,000, Schulfer said. Over the course of the last 10 events—which also offers up food for sale with a “shredded” theme, like coleslaw and shredding meat sandwiches—the company has raised $29,600 for Pacelli Catholic Schools.

Residents across the area are invited to bring their sensitive documents to the event, where it’s securely shredded by Express Recycling. This year, 13,233 pounds of documents were shredded, up from last year’s 12,779 pounds and bringing the total for the first decade to 115,012 pounds of paper.

Money raised during the 2020 event was initially meant to help pay for refinishing a gym floor within PCS, but Schulfer said plans changed when COVID hit, so now the funds will go towards “new operations costs brought on dealing with COVID,” to better fit the schools’ needs.

Previous years’ donations have funded an upgraded security system for the front entrance of the high school, Library World, an online program to better organize the library system for all Pacelli schools, robotics kits for students at the middle school, materials for the then newly-implemented Singapore math program, new playground equipment for the pre-school children, as well as various new technology equipment, contributions toward a student activities van and trailer, among other projects.

“We’ve already been asked if we’ll do it again next year, and yes, we are thrilled to give back to Pacelli Schools, who’ve given so much to our community for nearly 150 years,” Schulfer said.

The 2021 Shredding Party will return to the parking lot of Schulfer & Associates, 1417 Main St., sometime next May.
