Schmeeckle Reserve to host candlelight hike, nature programs in May

STEVENS POINT – Schmeeckle Reserve at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will host a series of spring programs and its popular Candlelight Hike Festival in May.
This year’s hike, themed “Fantastic Critters and Where to Find Them,” will take place Friday, May 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with donations welcomed.
Visitors can explore torch-lit trail loops through the reserve and enjoy character skits performed by UW-Stevens Point students at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the Pankowski Friends Amphitheater. The evening also includes marshmallow roasting by the fireplace and family-friendly, hands-on activities.
Parking is available near the reserve’s Visitor Center at 2419 North Point Drive. More information and volunteer opportunities are available at friendsofschmeeckle.org.
In addition to the hike, UWSP students studying environmental education and interpretation will offer free Family Nature Programs in May. All programs are open to the public and require no registration. Attendees are asked to dress for the weather and meet at the Visitor Center unless otherwise noted.

“Bandits of the Woods” – Friday, May 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Menzel Pavilion. Participants will take a nature walk focused on raccoons, learning about their habitats, diet, and predators.

“Nutty Neighbors: Understanding Squirrels” – Friday, May 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. A program comparing local squirrels to those found around the world.

Schmeeckle Reserve is a 280-acre nature preserve managed by UW-Stevens Point’s College of Natural Resources. It serves as an outdoor classroom, a site for ecological restoration, and a space for public recreation.
