Save the Date: Walk Wisconsin celebrates 14 years on June 2
For the Metro Wire
Walkers from throughout Wisconsin, along with their friends, family and relatives from around the state and across the country are gearing up for the fourteenth annual Walk Wisconsin, the Midwest’s premier walking event, taking place on Sat., June 2, 2018 in Portage County.
Walkers can choose from three marathon events, the full (26.2 miles), the half (13.1 miles) or the quarter (6.5 mile) marathon events, all along the Green Circle Trail in Portage County. Training schedules and registration forms (printable .pdf or on-line registration) are available on the Walk Wisconsin page at activeportagecounty.com
A 2.62 and 1.31 mile Kid’s Walk Wisconsin is also scheduled for Friday, June 1, 6 PM at Pfiffner Pioneer Park in Stevens Point. Check out the web site for registration information or contact the Central Wisconsin Children’s Museum at (715) 344-2003.
The non-competitive walking event began 14 years ago. Wellness-minded individuals from Ascension, Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Hilltop Pub & Grill, the Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Spectra Print and numerous other sponsors believe that in training for a distance walk, participants become “positively addicted” to this simple, inexpensive and extremely beneficial form of exercise.
Proceeds from the event help support health initiatives across Central Wisconsin and support the Happy Trails Fund and the Green Circle.
“Your best doctor can be your left leg and your right leg,” said John Jury, a member of the Walk Wisconsin Committee.
While it’s not a race, Walk Wisconsin is organized much like a regular running marathon. Those involved receive a sports sack, comfort and nutrition stops along the way, a finish line celebration and medallion, plus Portage Co. hospitality all day long.
