WOOD COUNTY — A Wisconsin Rapids man was ordered held on a $2 million cash bond after he allegedly shot at several officers on Aug. 20.

Two Portage County squad cars were damaged in a shooting that followed a pursuit on Aug. 20, according to Sheriff Mike Lukas. The suspect has been identified as Clinton Mayotte.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which began after Wisconsin Rapids police responded to a domestic violence report at a residence on the 900 block of 14th Street South. Officers were dispatched at about 12:32 a.m., but the suspect fled in a vehicle, prompting a chase.

A Portage County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but Mayotte, 40, of Wisconsin Rapids, sped away, leading officers westbound on State Highway 54. Mayotte fired several shots at officers during the pursuit, disabling a squad car near 8th Street and East Grand Avenue. He then fled on foot.

Authorities later located Mayotte on the roof of a home near 9th and Grape streets using a drone. He fired additional shots at officers and the drone. Officers returned fire, striking him.

Mayotte was transported to a local hospital after officers administered lifesaving measures. He remains in custody following a bond hearing in Wood County.

The Portage Co. deputies involved were placed on administrative assignment, following department policy. Body cameras worn by the officers captured the incident.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is working with the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Technical Reconstruction Unit, DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit, and a crime response specialist. All officers involved are cooperating with the investigation, which will be turned over to the Wood County District Attorney’s Office once complete.

Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas said no deputies were injured during the incident, adding that Mayotte is expected to face additional charges in Portage County.
