Red Kettle bell-ringing kicks off in Portage County

The Salvation Army’s 2024 Red Kettle Campaign officially launched on Nov. 6 at Festival Foods in Stevens Point, drawing community leaders, local law enforcement, firefighters, and members of the Portage County business community.

The annual campaign, marked by the familiar red kettles and bell-ringers outside of local stores, supports programs for those in need across Portage County.

State Sen. Patrick Testin expressed his appreciation for the community’s turnout, saying it underscored the generosity of Portage County residents. “It’s a testament to everyone here, and it’s just an honor to be here,” Testin said, acknowledging the county’s commitment to giving.

Assemblywoman Katrina Shankland thanked the Salvation Army for organizing the annual event and praised Portage County residents for their spirit of service.

“What I love about Portage County is we’re incredibly generous,” Shankland said, highlighting how community members volunteer their time and resources to support the unhoused.

Steve Kunst, village administrator of Plover, and Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza joined in emphasizing the impact of the campaign on the local community.

Wiza encouraged residents to volunteer and noted the expanded options for donations, including contactless card transactions. “The need is greater than ever,” Wiza said, “and it’s important we all do our part to help out.”

The campaign’s largest fundraising event, the Emergency Services Challenge, will take place Dec. 7. Plover Fire Chief Mark Deaver expressed optimism about surpassing last year’s fundraising total.

“It’s not about the trophy… it’s about raising more money to support our community,” Deaver said.

Salvation Army Executive Director Leigh Ann Trzinski said the organization’s work would not be possible without the continued support of community members.

“The need is growing exponentially,” Trzinski said, adding that funds raised stay within Portage County.

Assistant Director Alexandria McKelvey encouraged the public to register to ring bells at local retailers, with opportunities available at Festival Foods, Hobby Lobby, Amherst Family Foods, and others.

Bell ringing at Festival Foods, Hobby Lobby, and Amherst Family Foods began on Nov. 6. Walmart locations will start on Nov. 16, followed by Metro Market and Copps in Stevens Point, as well as Walgreens, beginning on Black Friday, Nov. 29.
