Rapids man released on signature bond for repeat battery charges

A Wisconsin Rapids man has been released on a $500 signature bond for charges related to domestic abuse and battery.

Matthew Scott, 24, was arraigned via video from the Portage Co. Jail on Sept. 19 by Judge Thomas Eagon. Scott was arrested on an active warrant issued after he failed to appear for a previous court date.

According to the criminal complaint, Plover police were called to a residence on Paradise Ln. on Sept. 11 by a woman who reported she’d been punched by Scott in the face. The strike reportedly left the woman with a bruised lip and a cut on the inside of her mouth about two inches long.

The woman told police Scott had struck her before and was already under a court order to avoid contact with her, the complaint said.

Scott had been scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 17 but missed that court date because, as he told Eagon, he’d been behind bars in Wood Co. on an unrelated charge.

Scott faces charges of misdemeanor battery, disorderly conduct, and bail-jumping, all with repeated designations and could spend more than six years behind bars if convicted on each. He also has an open case in Portage Co. for his third offense in three years of driving without a license.

Scott returns to court Nov. 5 for a pre-trial conference.
