POTD: Weeks away from the first throw

The county’s first axe-throwing facility is expected to open within the next few weeks. Section 715 Throwing Co. will permit participants as young as 12, as from all experience levels, to participate in the sport. Each participant gets a coach, a safety briefing, and must sign a liability waiver.

The facility is located at 3248 Mecca Dr., in the Duralum Building Center, also home to Back Country Brewing Company. The village approved a conditional use permit for the business in May.

Previously, the company launched under the name “Section 37 Axe House,” which co-owner Sarah Smith said was a nod to the lumberjacking history of Portage Co.

“A plat map (a guide to a tract of surveyed land) only has 36 sections,” Smith told the plan commission in May. “‘Section 37’ is kind of lumberjack lore for a place where lumberjacks go have fun and have a night on the town.”

Under its new name, Section 715 Throwing Co. will open “sometime between Christmas and New Years, we hope; that’s the plan,” Smith said on Dec. 10.
