Poll workers and staff members from various municipal clerk offices across Portage Co. kick-off day one of a 10-day presidential election recount on Dec. 1, 2016.
The recount effort was initiated by Green party presidential candidate Jill Stein and ended up favoring Republican Donald Trump. The recount found an additional 131 votes in his Wisconsin victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton. When the recount was complete, Trump led the state by 22,748 votes.
Stein finished fourth, behind Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson
Recount activities took place at the Portage Co. Courthouse. Volunteers conducted the hand recount in a roped-off area of a conference room, but the recount was public and several citizens observed from a seating area.
