POTD: Rollin’ the dice on early ice

Metro Wire Staff

PLOVER — Ice anglers try their luck on Springville Pond’s thin ice on Saturday, despite a warning from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Despite appearing solid, early ice is typically too thin and weak to support people or equipment, the DNR said. Ice may also conceal hazards like currents, debris, and underground springs, which can affect thickness.

The agency emphasized that it does not monitor ice conditions, urging residents to consult local fishing clubs, outfitters, or bait shops for the latest updates.

“No ice is safe ice,” the DNR said in a news release this week, recommending outdoor enthusiasts enjoy winter activities away from frozen water until the ice is at least four inches thick.

The agency also offered these safety tips:

  • Carry a cell phone and inform others of your plans.
  • Wear a flotation device or float coat to stay buoyant and minimize heat loss.
  • Use ice cleats to prevent slips on clear ice.
  • Avoid traveling in unfamiliar areas or at night.
