Portage County to host first ultra marathon in 2026

By Brandi Makuski

STEVENS POINT – Central Wisconsin will host its first ultra marathon next spring with The Dormie, a timed race set for May 30, 2026, on the UW–Stevens Point campus.

The event, organized by nonprofit Steps and Strides, Inc., will be held on a 1.01-square-mile loop around campus. Runners can choose between a six-hour or 12-hour challenge. Organizers are capping registration at 125 participants, with sign-ups opening Oct. 31.

The event is open to the public.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the UWSP cross country team. Head coach Thomas Bambach called it an opportunity to strengthen ties between the athletes and the community.

“It’s been a fairly new tradition for our athletes and we’re excited to bring it full circle back to the community,” Bambach said.

Tim Krause, a UWSP professor and member of the planning committee, said the event will be a chance for runners to test themselves while also giving back.

“As a marathoner myself, I know the challenge and the joy that comes from pushing your limits,” Krause said. “The Dormie will give runners that same opportunity right here in Central Wisconsin, while also building support for our student-athletes and the community we love.”

Steps and Strides, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, also organizes the Wonderful Water Run and Walk Wisconsin.
