Portage County law enforcement to increase patrols for St. Patrick’s Day weekend

PORTAGE COUNTY – Law enforcement agencies across Portage County will have additional officers on patrol during St. Patrick’s Day weekend as part of an effort to curb impaired driving, Sheriff Mike Lukas announced Monday.

The increased patrols will run from March 14-17, with officers focusing on detecting and stopping intoxicated drivers.

“Approximately every two hours, someone is injured or killed in an OWI-related crash in Wisconsin,” Lukas said in the announcement. “The goal of this extra enforcement effort is to ensure everyone can enjoy the weekend safely.”

Authorities encourage those celebrating to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or arranging for a safe ride home. Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is urged to call 911 and provide details on the driver, vehicle, location, and direction of travel.

“Preventing impaired driving is simple, but it requires a commitment from everyone,” Lukas said. “Talk with your loved ones about getting home safely and always drive sober.”
