Portage County Historical Society asks residents to help tell county’s story

PORTAGE COUNTY — As it prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary next year, the Portage County Historical Society is asking residents to help decide which stories deserve to be remembered.
The organization has launched “75 Stories of Portage County,” a community history project that will highlight the people, places, events and traditions that have helped shape the county over the years.
Starting in January 2027, the Historical Society will roll out a new group of stories each month through a traveling exhibit that will make stops at locations throughout Portage County. Each installment will also include programs and events designed to give residents a chance to learn more about the featured topics and share their own connections.
Executive Director John Harry said the project is meant to capture both the well-known moments in local history and the stories that may have been overlooked.
“We believe that history belongs to everyone,” Harry said. “This project is about more than looking backward. It’s about discovering the stories that connect us, the experiences that define us, and the shared history that continues to shape our community today.”
The Historical Society is inviting the public to submit ideas for stories they think should be considered. Nominations can include everything from major historical events and influential community members to longtime businesses, family stories, local traditions and lesser-known moments that have left a mark on Portage County.
Organizers hope the submissions reflect the county’s many communities, generations and perspectives. Although not every suggestion will become part of the exhibit, they say community input will play an important role in deciding which stories are ultimately featured.

More information about the project, including exhibit locations and related programming, will be released throughout 2026.
