Portage Co. to begin imposing seasonal weight restrictions
Metro Wire Staff
The Portage Co. Highway Department will begin imposing seasonal weight restrictions on all county trunk highways beginning March 8.
Weight restrictions are six tons gross load for single axle and 10 tons gross load for each tandem axle (any two axles under 8 feet apart). The maximum gross vehicle weight is 26 tons.
The weight restrictions are for county trunk highways only, and any weight restrictions on state, city, village, or town roads are handled by each individual municipality.
According to Highway Commission Nathan Check, the highway department will begin installing signs along all posted roads beginning at 7 a.m. on March 8.
Seasonal weight restrictions are enforced annually in the spring during the time that the frost is coming out of the ground, a necessary step to protect roadway pavement, which is susceptible to damage by heavy loads during the spring.
Permits to exceed the limits may be granted based. Anyone seeking a permit should contact the highway department.
