PORTAGE COUNTY — The Portage County Sheriff’s Office will join law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs from Friday, Aug. 16, through Labor Day, Sept. 2.
The statewide initiative aims to reduce alcohol-related traffic incidents by increasing patrols and extending enforcement hours. Last year, Wisconsin recorded 5,976 alcohol-related crashes, resulting in 159 fatalities—nearly a quarter of all traffic deaths in the state.
“This campaign isn’t just about making arrests; it’s about saving lives and preventing unnecessary tragedies during the holiday season,” said Sheriff Mike Lukas. “We urge all drivers to make smart and responsible decisions.”
Wisconsin has equipped 7,579 officers with Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) training, and the state boasts 390 Drug Recognition Experts, making it one of the most advanced in the nation. Additionally, 30 multi-jurisdictional high-visibility enforcement task forces will be active during the campaign.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or finding a safe alternative to get home. The public is also urged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 and providing details about the driver, vehicle, and location.
“Our goal is to ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely during this campaign and throughout the year,” Lukas said.
